‘Virginia’ Channels David Lynch to Create Subtle, Surreal Horrors [Safe Room Podcast]

Before diving into this week’s episode of Safe Room, check out last week’s episode of Horror Bytes, in which Neil and I each highlight four bite-sized horror experiences.

This week’s episode sees the return of our Chopping Block segment, in which one of us assigns the other spooky HW in an attempt to help us tackle our collectively growing back catalogs.

And for this edition, Neil has picked Virginia from Variable State, a horror adjacent mystery that what it lacks in traditional dialogue it makes up for in surreal and emotional cinematic storytelling. We cover the importance of Lyndon Holland’s score, Variable State’s play-like direction, and utilizing surreal dreamscapes to emphasize the narrative. –Jay Krieger

Safe Room is a weekly horror video game discussion podcast with new episodes every Monday on
