‘Evil Dead: The Game’ DLC Review – What the New Remake Characters Bring to the Table

Less than two months since Evil Dead: The Game’s most significant update, Saber Interactive has already implemented its next large-scale patch earlier this month. In addition to some quality of life improvements (including a much needed Map Selection feature for Exploration Mode), a handful of characters have also been added: survivors Mia and David from Evil Dead (2013), and the all new Plaguebringer demon class led by the iconic Witch from Army of Darkness.

Mia and David have been added to the Warrior and Support classes respectively, with both characters’ perks being centered around fear and disrupting the killers’ attack methods. As the game’s first woman Warrior, Mia succeeds most as a disruptive tank that can become impervious to possession and help restore order during ambushes. However, her ability is a bit of a gambit–while activated, her fear meter will continue to increase and cannot be decreased.

There’s some good news though: Mia’s strength is tied to her fear, so the higher her fear meter is, the more powerful she becomes. Furthermore, on her ability’s cooldown, her fear meter will decrease based on the amount of enemies she defeats during it. Mia players will need to learn how to calculate the best time to activate and capitalize on her ability, especially during pivotal moments of matches like the end-game. I’d say she’s a character that might be better for more experienced folks.

On a similar note of controlling fear during matches, David acts essentially as a portable fire with his Beacon of Hope ability–think Cheryl’s ability, but instead of restoring health in its proximity, it’s a blue flame that reduces fear. Furthermore, all enemies within the aura of Beacon of Hope will require an increased amount of infernal energy for the killer to possess them. Like Mia, David’s ability works best for disrupting the killers’ plans, essentially acting as a get-out-of-jail-free card if activated at the right moment.

It goes without saying that pairing Mia and David on a team is an effective way to take back control from the killer during matches. With Mia able to hold down the fort when the killer strikes, and David able to focus on damage control when the team needs to rally together, they function as a unique tool that can throw a wrench in the killers’ plans.

Speaking of killers, the all new Plaguebringer class is a force to be reckoned with. Led by The Witch from Army of Darkness (sometimes known as ‘She-Bitch’), the class is all about weakening survivors over time, and it’s a boss unit that may be the best in the game currently. The Witch and her elite unit, Pit Deadites, have abilities that inflict Blight upon survivors, which causes them to temporarily take more damage than usual. While her basic Deadite units aren’t very powerful, she makes up for it as being one of the most devastating boss units. Her Primal Scream ability enables her to stun survivors in her path, and when she is defeated, she resurrects again as a glass cannon that’s more powerful but has low health.

The new characters on both sides offer more nuance to the gameplay of Evil Dead, and I get the feeling that they’re more suited for players who are more familiar with the ins and outs of the games’ chaotic matches. While The Plaguebringer class is a free add-on for all players, Mia and David can be purchased as a package deal for $9.99, and are also free for players who have Evil Dead: The Game’s season 1 pass.
