Fan Remakes of ‘Resident Evil Remake’ and ‘Code: Veronica’ Cancelled

Sadly, all good things come to an end. And in the case of the fan remakes of Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil Remake, that’s unfortunately the case. The devs behind the project, Matt Croft, Briins Croft and DarkNemesisUmbrella, made the surprise announcement just as the Code: Veronica remake was nearing its release.

The announcement was made on the developer’s discord, where they revealed that Capcom had contacted them and asked for the projects to be stopped. The developers stressed that this isn’t an indication that Capcom themselves are working on a Code: Veronica remake (despite Resident Evil 4 remake producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi offering the slimmest of hopes).

As for why the fan remakes were cancelled, the devs said that it came down to the use of Capcom-owned characters and the Resident Evil trademark determined. Some have pointed out that the developers had set up donation links as another reason for the cancellation (since it could be construed as the team profiting off of the game), though the team denies this.

While this isn’t surprising in the least, it does beg the question as to why the fan remake of Code: Veronica was singled out over something like Daymare: 1998, which originally started out as a fan remake of Resident Evil 2 (before Capcom themselves announced an official remake). It could have been the fact that the fan remake had been trending in searches for Code: Veronica leading up to its release, though that’s purely speculation.

In the meantime, we still have the Resident Evil 4 remake on the horizon, which arrives March 24, 2023 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
