Looking for a short-but-sweet psychological horror gaming experience? Better yet, something that’s free? Then indie dev KREIDPIX has your fix with their recently-released lo-fi Survival Horror game Scauage, which is available now on Steam. While at just ~40 minutes of gameplay, KREIDPIX has aimed to pack “non-stop tension” into Scauage, including several endings and plenty of references to classic horror films.
The story goes that the town of Prefield was once a bustling hub of activity, thanks to the nearby mines. However, as the mines began to run dry, the town began to fade. Prefield is now a ghost town, now home to marauders and scavengers who now roam the area in search of a fortune.
You take on the role of one such scavenger, looking for valuable items hidden away in the remnants of Prefield. One building stands out to you: An old two-story country house that appears ripe to be holding something worthwhile. You decide to enter the house, but quickly find more than you bargained.
Scauage touts realistic movement/flashlight mechanics that offer complete immersion with its throwback PS1 graphics that echo the “feeling of 1960s America.” That, and the game makes use of atmospheric 3D sounds to get the tension ramped up. While ransacking the place, you’ll have to deal with unconventional puzzles that require you to “think outside the box.”
