‘Yellowjackets’ Season 3: An Explosive Season Finale

yellowjackets

This article contains spoilers for Yellowjackets season 3.

Yellowjackets truly came full circle in the season 3 finale. With bodies falling left and right, creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson continue to keep us on our toes and deliver a finale that’s promising and hopeful, albeit heartbreaking. This season was packed with twists, turns, and some creative decisions that not everyone may have appreciated (why, adult Van, why?!). But we also witnessed truly shocking developments—namely, Callie’s confession. That moment made me reflect on her dynamics with Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) and how Shauna’s choices, trauma, and past profoundly shaped Callie (Sarah Desjardins), influencing how she perceives life and death.

Yellowjackets season 3 ends with a flicker of hope as Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) establishes contact with someone who may be able to rescue them. Meanwhile, we witness adult Taissa’s (Tawny Cypress) growing rage toward Shauna as she not-so-subtly begins conspiring with Misty (Christina Ricci) to take her down. But that’s just the beginning. We finally learn that Mari is the legendary Pit Girl introduced in season 1, and the true identity of the Antler Queen is revealed—hello, Shauna! Still, another major twist emerges in Misty’s interaction with Callie and, later, in a pivotal conversation between Callie and Jeff (Warren Kole), where a devastated teenager reveals she was the one who killed Lottie.

As Desjardins’ character recounts the events, we’re shown a series of retrospective sequences between Callie and Lottie (Simone Kessell), giving us clarity on what really transpired. As Shauna’s daughter challenges Lottie about their past and her mother, it’s clear she’s not looking for a fight—she’s looking for answers, because she loves her mom: “My dad says that she has PTSD, but is it—is that really it? Like, she does normal mom stuff, she bugs me about my grades, and she tells me she loves me. But then I look into her eyes, and they’re just… they’re so cold.”

Their exchange, taking place in the basement of a hotel owned by Lottie’s father, grows increasingly tense, exacerbated by Lottie’s already fragile mental state and Callie’s escalating fear. Kessell’s character makes one last attempt to sway Callie, leaning into her eerie belief born in the wilderness:

Well, you know what it is (…). It’s It. You know It. You feel It right now. I could see that the first moment I met you, holding that gun. And when you drugged Misty, that was It. And your mother, she felt It more strongly than the rest of us, and she sees It growing in you (…). It undergirds everything. It is the pulse of life. It’s why we did what we did out there. It’s why we couldn’t stop (…). Hunting each other. And all of those thrilling, terrible things.

When Lottie crosses the line and implies that Shauna cannot truly love Callie because she’s jealous of her, something inside Callie breaks. After the girl pushes Lottie, we watch her fall in slow motion, and we see her smirking—because Callie, in her mind, is proving her point. She’s succumbing to rage, just like her mother did in the wilderness. What makes this moment so gut-wrenching is that Shauna, so consumed by paranoia and convinced someone is stalking her (only partially true), fails to recognize that Callie isn’t acting out to be difficult or spiteful—she’s desperately trying to connect. She wants her mother’s attention. She wants to be close.

Even in the previous two seasons, while in a more rebellious phase, her curiosity about her mother’s past gnawed at her. In season 3, her attitude towards her mom changes due to what she experiences in season 2, especially the finale. In some ways, Callie began to understand her mother’s actions and wanted to know more and to understand her more to, in turn, better understand herself.

Throughout Yellowjackets season 3, we’re shown small but significant moments of Callie trying to reach out to Lynskey’s character, from the scenes at their home, with Misty and Lottie, to the hotel, and beyond. She asks normal questions that anybody in her position would ask. When the truth finally spills out as Misty confronts her, Callie then turns to Jeff, the only constant and safe space she has left. In a tragic irony, Jeff’s worst fear comes true, and you can see the heartbreak on his face. Though occasionally inept, Kole’s character genuinely tries to protect Callie from Shauna and provide her with some semblance of stability. But Shauna’s violent past catches up to her, and it starts to consume Callie as well.

The confession scene stands as one of the most emotionally powerful moments in a season finale that’s bursting with shocking reveals. As Callie tears up, her voice trembles with desperation: “You think she was right, don’t you? And that I’m fucked up, just like Mom (…). I killed someone (…). I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”

And in this moment, Jeff steps up, embracing his daughter:

It’s okay, you’re telling me now. Took your mom 25 years to tell me ten percent of the truth. Now it doesn’t even seem like it was that much. I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I didn’t protect you from her. I should’ve done that. That’s what I should have done.

In the aftermath, Jeff makes the only logical and compassionate choice: he and Callie leave without telling Shauna, informing her only that they need space. Their decision underlines a painful truth: nurture outweighs nature. And in this case, Shauna failed. Not only did she keep devastating secrets, but season 3 reveals her true nature. In the wilderness, she has become a cruel, calculated, and emotionally aloof person. This answers a lingering question as to why the older Yellowjackets didn’t hesitate to hunt Shauna at Lottie’s compound in the season 2 finale.

With the season 3 finale truly closing the loop and connecting back to the very start of season 1, Shauna’s future looks bleak. Now alone, without Jeff and Callie and with Taissa and Misty closing in on her, season 4—if it happens—may finally hold her accountable for everything she’s done.
