Guillermo del Toro has enjoyed a storied and illustrious career to date, and he’s showing absolutely no signs of slowing down at this juncture. His passion for cinema is absolutely infectious, and his knowledge is unmatched.
In celebration of the beloved creator’s iconic filmography, the fine folks at Beyond Fest (in partnership with the American Cinematheque) are programming an epic retrospective screening series featuring a number of films helmed by the decorated director.
The organizers have dubbed the event ‘Está Vivo: The Gods and Monsters of Guillermo del Toro.’ The retrospective will consist of 12 films, and it will be presented in four core programming blocks with two one-off screenings. Oh, and we almost forgot to mention, the auteur filmmaker is on deck to make an appearance at each of the four programming blocks!
The first programming segment is called ‘In the Mood for Love’ and will feature Crimson Peak, Nightmare Alley: Vision in Darkness and Light, and The Shape of Water. This block sets out to explore the dynamic emotional core of the director’s storied filmography.
The next segment is ‘From Sketch to Screen.’ It will feature the director’s noteworthy contributions to comic book cinema. This programming block will screen Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Blade II.
The next block is called ‘The Early Years.’ As the title suggests, it will feature early career efforts for del Toro. The lineup will include 4K restorations of Cronos and The Devil’s Backbone, along with the director’s cut of del Toro’s Hollywood debut, Mimic.
The final programming block is dubbed ‘The Revolution,’ and it contains just one film: Pan’s Labyrinth. Seeing as this one stands as one of the director’s most iconic efforts, it seems only fair that it doesn’t have to share the spotlight.
Aside from the themed blocks, the retrospective series will also feature screenings of Pacific Rim and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. The director, however, will not make an appearance at either of those screenings.
The four core programming blocks will play at The Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, whereas the one-off screenings of Pacific Rim and Pinocchio will take place at the Los Feliz 3.
If you’re keen to attend, you will want to act quickly. Tickets are likely to go fast. You can find them available through the American Cinematheque website starting Thursday, September 4th at 12 PM Pacific.
That’s just about all that we’ve got for you at present. Make sure to stay tuned to the site for more exciting developments as they break. In the meantime, you can always keep up with all things Dread Central on Twitter (X) @DreadCentral.
