John Carpenter’s Halloween has become a cultural phenomenon in the years since its 1978 debut. So much so that it often returns to cinemas during the spooky season to give fans a chance to experience this defining film on the big screen. This year is no exception. CineLife Entertainment and Trancas International Films have partnered to bring The Shape to more than 80 markets (with close to 400 total showings planned so far). This time around, you can also catch fan-favorite sequels, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers on the big screen.
Just getting to see these films in a cinema is exciting in and of itself. However, this screening series is of special importance. The version of Halloween playing is restored and remastered under the watchful eye of original cinematographer, Dean Cundey.
The original stands as a timeless effort, making this retrospective screening the kind of opportunity you won’t want to miss out on. As for the sequels that followed, they are kind of a mixed bag. Some of them have really stood the test of time, while others have failed to leave their mark. With that said, the fourth and fifth series installments remain cult classics and stand among the very best follow-ups for most. So, they make for a perfect complement to the original in this screening series.
Though Jamie Lee Curtis passed on the chance to return to the franchise after the one-off sequel Halloween III mixed things up and incurred the wrath of fans in the process, Danielle Harris stepped in, establishing herself as a fan-favorite character in Halloween 4 and Halloween 5. She bridges these installments to the original two, appearing as Laurie Strode’s daughter, Jamie Lloyd. That proved a passing of the torch as Harris established herself as a bona fide scream queen, like Curtis did years prior.
The setup for John Carpenter’s seminal classic is this:
On a cold Halloween night in 1963, six-year-old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes from Smith’s Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims.
If you would like to secure your tickets for one (or more) of these retrospective screenings, you can do just that right here.
