Matthew Lillard Breaks Silence on ‘Scream 7’ Casting: “It’s not going to ruin the franchise!”

scream 7 Matthew Millard

This past weekend, Matthew Lillard made an appearance at Silver Scream Con in Massachusetts. During one of the panels, he took a moment to reflect on the moment Kevin Williamson reached out to him about returning to the Scream franchise for the series’ upcoming seventh installment.

Lillard makes no secret that he is downright giddy about the chance to play Stu Macher one more time. The actor told a room full of enthusiastic panel Silver Scream Con attendees about receiving a phone call from Scream 7 director Kevin Williamson. He paints the exchange as a pivotal moment, making it clear that he had no hesitation or reservations about playing Stu again. The actor then says: “And I literally thought to myself, ‘I’ve been waiting for this call for, like, 20 years.’”

Lillard clearly cherishes this role, and he regards the series with the same reverence we do, telling the panel attendees, “I’m thrilled to be back. The movie’s fantastic, and I’m really excited for people to see it. It’s not gonna ruin the franchise, that’s the good news. I don’t think!” The full conversation was posted in an Instagram video shared by Bloody Disgusting,

His remarks have me optimistic that we’re in for something special. I’m excited to see Williamson step into the director’s chair. He hasn’t helmed a feature since Teaching Mrs. Tingle in 1999. With that said, he created this franchise, and I think he’s a logical choice to take the reins.

Williamson directed from a screenplay written by Guy Busick. The treatment comes from a story Busick wrote with James Vanderbilt. If those names sound familiar, it’s likely because those two wrote Scream (2022) and Scream VI.

In addition to the returning creatives behind the camera and Lillard reprising his role as Stu, you can also expect to see several other familiar faces back for this latest outing. David Arquette will make his triumphant return as fan-favorite character Dewey; Scott Foley is on tap to reprise his role as Roman (from Scream 3); Neve Campbell will be back after being absent from Scream VI; Courteney Cox is returning as Gale Weathers; Mason Gooding is confirmed to reprise his role as Chad Meeks-Martin from the past two films, and Jasmin Savoy Brown will be back as his twin sister, Mindy Meeks-Martin.

Scream

The Scream franchise has long been a reliable and consistent presence in the horror space. Here’s hoping that the seventh instalment keeps up that trend. However, we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out. The film is slated to debut in theaters on February 27, 2026.
