Fantastic Fest is always a great place to discover amazing indie horror films, and one of the standouts from this year’s lineup looks to be The Restoration at Grayson Manor. It’s got everything you could want: Alice Krige in villain mode, a strange old house, killer hands, and we’ve got an exclusive clip to show you right now.
Directed by Glenn McQuaid (I Sell The Dead, V/H/S), who also co-wrote the film with Clay McLeod Chapman (Ghost Eaters, Wake Up And Open Your Eyes), Grayson Manor follows Boyd (Chris Colfer), a young queer piano player who likes to pick up men and bring them back to his family’s estate. Why? Well, there’s the sex, but Boyd really wants to flaunt his lifestyle in front of his mother Jacqueline (Krige), who hates that her son has no interest in giving the Grayson family another heir.
Boyd’s ready to leave his mother behind, but a freak accident leaves him suddenly and gruesomely missing both hands. His mother throws herself, and her considerable fortune, into restoring Boyd through advanced prosthetic technology, unknowingly opening a Pandora’s box of tech horror and psychosexual nightmares.
In the clip below, we get a glimpse of Jacqueline and her testy relationship with Boyd’s chief caretaker, Dr. Tannock (Daniel Adegboyega), while Boyd himself has a tense moment with another member of the medical team, Lee (Declan Reynolds). Everyone seems sick of each other and ready to bolt, but then an unexpected visitor ushers in some chaos.
It’s a short clip, to be sure, but there are hints in here of everything this film has to offer. It’s darkly funny, it’s a bit sexy, it’s a bit twisted, and it’s got the energy of a classic melodrama in the vein of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? And all of that is before the severed hand comes walking into the room, Addams Family-style. Plus, anyone who’s been paying attention to Krige’s career in recent years knows that she’s a treat for any horror film.
The Restoration at Grayson Manor celebrates its world premiere at Fantastic Fest Sunday, September 21 at 5:20 PM CT.
