ICYMI: Canadian horror fans, mark your calendars — tickets for the 2025 Toronto After Dark Film Festival are officially on sale! The Canadian spook-fest is one of Dread Central’s Best Genre Festivals on Earth, and we’ve got a peek at why that is:
This year’s festival lineup promises pure genre mayhem, featuring the Canadian Premieres of Johannes Roberts’ terrifying creature feature Primate and Jalmari Helander’s action-packed sequel Sisu: Road to Revenge.
Fans of the undead can look forward to Tina Romero’s zombie comedy Queens of the Dead, Adam MacDonald’s gripping YA adaptation This Is Not a Test, and Ed Shimborske’s stylish vampire tale On Gallows Hill. Plus, William Bagley’s supernatural action epic Hold the Fort unites nearly every creature of the night for one wild showdown.
The thrills continue with global genre standouts like Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s stylish Reflections in a Dead Diamond and Gabriele Mainetti’s sweeping Forbidden City, from the minds behind Freaks Out. The festival will wrap with heartfelt love letters to horror filmmaking — Sean Cisterna’s documentary Silver Screamers and Kenichi Ugana’s offbeat I Fell in Love with a Z-Grade Director in Brooklyn!
Blood ain’t thicker than maple syrup
Every feature will be paired with a Canadian short film, including Kier-La Janisse’s fiction debut The Occupant of the Room in the Canadian After Dark Short Film Showcase (Saturday, Sept. 18 at 3:45 PM).
