It’s hard to believe that October is in full swing already. Maybe it’s because we’re still experiencing 70+ degree weather in Portland as I write this. No matter, I’m still getting into the spirit of the spooky season, revisiting horror films that get me in a festive mood. You know I’ll be binging the Halloween series, along with Trick ‘r Treat, Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and plenty of other familiar favorites that make the cut each year.
I’ve got my work cut out for me with plenty of films to choose from. I even have plans to work some fresh titles in, beyond the usual suspects. For example, I’m planning to revisit a film that I critiqued last year and noted (right in the headline) that it “recalls the insanity of early Sam Raimi.”
Carved is Hulu’s Unsung Original Halloween Horror Movie

I’m talking about the Hulu original horror film Carved. I’ll level with you. It wasn’t a resounding success with critics when it dropped on the platform last year, but I sure enjoyed it. In an excerpt from my coverage, I noted that “[Director Justin] Harding pushes boundaries with both the horror elements and the comedic aspects. He leans into the TVMA rating, harkening back to the cinematic output of the ‘80s and ‘90s. There are more decapitations than I could count, and there’s more swearing than I knew what to do with. It’s nice to see a distributor give filmmakers the freedom to be a little edgy. Here’s hoping we see that trend bleed into theatrical horror a bit more often.”
What is Carved about?

On Halloween 1993, two years after a deadly nuclear spill, the staff of a historic pioneer village attraction must work together to survive the attack of a monstrous killer pumpkin set on revenge.
Director Harding shares writing credit on this project with Cheryl Meyer, with Harding also taking a ‘story by’ credit. He demonstrates a knack for blending viscera and slapstick comedy, which is what brings early Raimi to mind.
The film features a fairly solid cast that includes a mix of up-and-comers and familiar faces. Matty Cardarople, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Corey Fogelmanis, DJ Qualls, and Carla Jimenez topline the core cast.
Since the film is a Hulu original, you can stream it on the platform whenever the mood strikes. Keep an open mind, and you may just find that you have a great time with this gruesome romp. If you decide to check the film out as part of your spooky season lineup, be sure to let us know what you think in the comments section below.
