Guillermo del Toro Loves This Claustrophobic Masterpiece Now on Prime Video: “Utterly terrifying”

I love subterranean horror. The underground setting adds a layer of claustrophobic intensity that most surface-level efforts simply cannot match. Watching characters contending with various forms of unpleasantness in cavernous expanses hits all the right notes for me. It seems that I’m in good company in that regard. CrimsonPeak director Guillermo del Toro has previously revealed a similar fondness for several subterranean horror pictures. Del Toro is an outspoken fan of the subterranean horror Raw Meat. Not to mention, he also holds Neil Marshall’s The Descent in similarly high regard.

The Descent is an utterly terrifying effort that manages to be supremely scary before the central threat even arrives on the scene. When the antagonists ultimately materialize, the tension ratchets up to the point of being almost intolerable.

The setup for this subterranean creature feature finds a group of friends uniting for an epic spelunking adventure. They eventually get much more than they bargained for when they encounter a horde of cave-dwelling creatures who consider human flesh a delicacy.

The film is so intense that it’s even unnerving to seasoned horror fans. In fact, Del Toro used the words “utterly terrifying” to describe The Descent.

Here’s what Guillermo del Toro thinks of The Descent:

The Descent is the perfect horror film to watch when you’re home alone with all of the lights off. The film is so jarring that I can all but guarantee it will send even the most hardened horror fan to bed afraid of their own shadow. If you’re up for it, you can currently find the flick streaming on Prime Video.

If you connect with The Descent, you might find yourself tempted to check out the sequel, The Descent Part 2. You know better than anyone what’s good for you, dear reader. But I must warn you that it’s a far cry from the original. The follow-up scores points for featuring returning characters, but misses the mark in a variety of other ways. If my warning does not deter you, you can find it streaming on Plex right now.

Well, that’s just about all that we’ve got for you, for the time being. Stay tuned to Dread Central in the near future for more movie night recommendations from your favorite creators in the genre space.
