Some movies are pretty killer. I mean that in the most explicit way. This summer’s Bring Her Back left me haunted for weeks, and yeah, it probably triggered some of my clinical depression more than I wished. That’s not a knock, either– that’s the hallmark of a good horror movie, after all. I want to feel something. Feel something visceral. Something physical. Something that sends my body into orbit and sinks my heart into my chest. Even 28 Years Later had me reflecting on the broader meaning of life in ways I may not have been the most prepared for.
This summer was a smorgasbord of killer horror flicks. One in particular nearly pushed me to my physical limits. It was a movie so intense, so unbearably frightening, I had to excuse myself from the auditorium as a panic attack set in. That’s big talk, but it’s real, and now you can catch not just the year’s best horror movie, but one of the century’s best streaming online. You probably know what it is, but whether it’s a first watch or a revisit, Weapons is worth streaming again and again.
Per HBO Max: When all but one child from the same class vanish on the same night at 2:17 a.m., a community is left questioning who is behind their disappearance.
In an editorial I penned shortly after Weapons’ release, I wrote, “So, I went, and I felt like I wanted to die (positively). Yes, I know that sounds extreme. But I promise it’s true. I was breathless during the third act. I had to excuse myself at the end to collapse in the theater lobby and simply breathe, because it felt like I hadn’t let out a breath from Weapons’ third act onward.”
In our 5-star review, our Josh Korngut wrote, “Weapons is shocking, satisfying, and certain to surprise even the most jaded of horror fans. This is an immediate horror classic that should be watched with an audience.” Weapons isn’t a sensation for nothing. It’s the freshest, most surprising horror release in years, and I fully anticipate we’ll be talking about it for years to come. I know I will be, even if it was nearly the death of me. What a way to go, huh?
What do you think? Any plans to check out Weapons? It’s currently streaming on HBO Max. It’s the best horror movie in years. Do it. I beg of you. When you do, let me know what you think over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
