After two box office hits and the conclusion of a hit series, Stephen King‘s “It” is officially a “universe”.
“It: Welcome to Derry” came with many surprises, but the biggest was that time doesn’t work the same for the terrifying Pennywise, and that he didn’t actually “die” at the end of the series, nor It: Chapter One (2017) or It: Chapter Two (2019). In fact, both the series and films leave open “gaps” that could be filled with more prequels/sequels.
Franchise Producer Barbara Muschietti teases Pennywise’s eventual return in more film and tv, really pushing in that King’s creation is now a universe and that there are plenty of “holes” to fill, strongly stating that she doesn’t believe this to be the end.
“We shall see. It’s a universe. It is a universe, and there are characters that are still fascinating,” she tells Screenrant. “There are more gaps. When the great Stephen King wrote the book, I think that he left those holes on purpose. And if he didn’t do it on purpose, they’re just as great. They’re great accidents, but for us, they are a wonder.
“In doing the first season, of course, we uncovered a lot of holes,” she continues. “And also, of course, we read the book for the first time when we were 14 and 15, and now we are 52 and 53. We’re parents, and the perspective changes all the time. So, I don’t know. I don’t think this is the end, basically, is all I’ll say.“
The first season of “It: Welcome to Derry” just wrapped up and potentially sets the table for a prequel series that would take place decades prior (e.g., 1935, 1908).
What do you readers think? What would you like to see from the “It” universe?
