Stephen King is basically the horror genre. Seriously. Every year, two or three of the highest-profile horror releases are adapted from the seminal writer’s source material. This year alone, we’ve had The Monkey, The Long Walk, and The Running Man. Maybe you’ve taken it for granted, but horror cinema as we know it is, in part, the house that Stephen King built. With so many titles to choose from, it’s understandable that they’re not all winners. One maligned adaptation is, curiously, an ultimately forgotten gem, nowhere near as bad as you remember. Now, you can catch the film streaming for free on Tubi. Learn more about Dreamcatcher below.
Dreamcatcher stars Thomas Jane, Jason Lee, Damian Lewis, and Timothy Olyphant. Adapted from Stephen King’s body horror novel of the same name, the film follows four friends who encounter extraterrestrial lifeforms in the frozen woods. There are a lot of conventional King elements at play, including a throughline of psychic powers shared among the friends, bullies, and the kind of male camaraderie King loves to dabble in.
Dreamcatcher boasts an abysmal 27% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience score—at 36%– isn’t all that much better. At the time of release, Dreamcatcher was a box office bomb, grossing just $75 million against a staggering $68 million budget. As a result, Dreamcatcher is, ironically enough, remembered by many as little more than a dream. A thoroughly forgetful take on a lesser-known King novel at the height of the author’s cinematic influence.
Not all were lost, however. Our own Editorial Director, Josh Korngut, writing about Dreamcatcher in 2022, remarked:
“Both this adaptation and the novel received mixed reviews, and it’s easy to see why. The film is an extremely graphic and bizarre science fiction exploration of body horror which features a particularly gruesome bathroom sequence that won’t soon be forgotten. Say what you will about Dreamcatcher, this fever dream of a movie is a hell of a unique winter sleigh ride worth revisiting at least one more time.”
I agree. It’s likely been more than two decades since you’ve seen Dreamcatcher, and with the film streaming free, now’s as good a time as any to curl up by the fire and give Dreamcatcher a second chance.
