Absolute Batman is arguably the biggest thing to happen to DC Comics in more than two decades. Batman remains the publisher’s most valuable IP, and with Absolute Batman continuing to post massive sales numbers nearly two years into its run, it would be more surprising if DC weren’t developing some form of adaptation.
Whether that’s an animated series, feature film, anime project, or even a live-action production remains unknown. But over the past few months, rumors surrounding an Absolute Batman adaptation have continued to circulate throughout convention circles and online communities.
The latest round of speculation was sparked by the verified Instagram account Josh’s Comic Books, which posted the following:
“I can say with absolute certainty… that I have absolutely no evidence… that an Absolute Batman anime movie is in the works. Better grab your copies now before this completely unfounded rumor sends prices to the moon.”
“For legal reasons, I made this up.”
While clearly framed as a “joke”, the post immediately got collectors and fans talking.
Adding fuel to the conversation is the fact that Nick Dragotta, co-creator and artist of Absolute Batman, has already publicly expressed interest in seeing the series adapted as an anime. During a League of Comic Geeks AMA, Dragotta said:
“Personally, I’d love to see a Studio Trigger anime of Ab Bat.”
For those unfamiliar, Studio Trigger is the acclaimed Japanese animation studio behind Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, one of the most celebrated anime adaptations of the past decade.
I’ve also heard similar rumors myself. Late last year, I was told that an animated Absolute Batman project was being discussed internally. At the time, I couldn’t independently verify the information, so I never reported it. Since then, however, I’ve received multiple emails from readers and heard from several people within comic circles who claim they’ve heard similar things through convention conversations and industry contacts.
None of that constitutes confirmation, of course.
But with San Diego Comic-Con just weeks away, the timing is difficult to ignore. Comic-Con remains the largest intersection of comics and Hollywood, and it’s often where major adaptation announcements are unveiled.
If I were placing a bet today, I’d put my money on some kind of Absolute Batman adaptation being announced before the end of July.
And even if this specific anime rumor proves inaccurate, the larger prediction feels inevitable. Since launching in 2024, Absolute Batman has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, helping establish DC’s Absolute Universe initiative as one of the company’s most successful modern publishing efforts. Written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Nick Dragotta, the series reinvented Bruce Wayne as a working-class hero and immediately connected with readers, critics, and collectors alike.
I’ve covered the rise of Absolute Batman extensively here at Dread Central, from the collector frenzy surrounding early issues to editorials examining why the series has resonated so strongly with fans. Whether the next step is an anime, animated feature, television series, or something else entirely, Absolute Batman feels destined to make the leap beyond comics sooner rather than later.
