‘Evil Dead Burn’ Star Hunter Doohan Teases Franchise-Spanning Connection Through Professor Knowby

One of the biggest questions surrounding Evil Dead Burn has been how, if at all, the latest chapter would connect to the larger mythology established across more than four decades of films.

According to star Hunter Doohan (Wednesday), fans may be getting a much deeper connection than expected.

Speaking with Out, Doohan revealed that his character Joseph has a direct link to one of the most important figures in the entire franchise.

“Joseph is working on a book about his grandfather’s research,” Doohan tells Out. “His grandfather knew Professor Knowby.”

For longtime Evil Dead fans, that’s a name that immediately stands out.

Professor Raymond Knowby is the archaeologist whose research into the Necronomicon and recorded incantations helped unleash the Kandarian evil at the cabin in The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II. The character has remained one of the central connective figures in the franchise’s mythology, with his family and research continuing to echo throughout subsequent films and television projects.

Doohan went on to suggest that Evil Dead Burn isn’t merely dropping a reference for longtime fans, but actively weaving together various corners of the franchise’s lore.

“I loved how this script not only ties back a little bit to Evil Dead Rise — but this movie connects the lore through the whole franchise, which I found really exciting,” Doohan tells Out.

That’s an intriguing tease, particularly because the Evil Dead timeline has largely functioned as a collection of interconnected stories rather than one tightly unified mythology. While Evil Dead Rise expanded the universe beyond the familiar cabin setting and introduced another of the franchise’s infamous Books of the Dead, Burn appears poised to dig into the history behind the people who have spent decades studying these ancient forces.

Evil Dead Burn hits theaters on July 10.
