Noah Hawley Teases How ‘Alien: Earth’ Will Make Gnarly Alien Life Cycles Terrifying Again

“It’s like a zoo but the animals got out.” That’s a line spoken in the trailer for the series “Alien: Earth” from creator Noah Hawley, which not only brings the franchise’s particular brand of terror to Planet Earth but also unleashes several new species of alien horrors. Another line from the trailer? “This ship collected five different lifeforms from the darkest corners of the universe. Monsters.” We know that one of those monsters is of course the Xenomorph, but what about the others? Hawley teases them in the latest issue of SFX Magazine.

Of particular note, Hawley discusses the way in which the new species have allowed him to make the franchise’s monsters surprising – and terrifying – again. After all, we’re quite familiar with the way the Xenomorph life cycle plays out by now, but these brand new monsters are completely foreign to even the most hardcore fans of the Alien franchise universe.

“These are five unique species that have been collected on this Maginot ship, which I saw as like the HMS Beagle, Charles Darwin going around collecting his specimens from around the universe,” Hawley explains. “The reason that I did that is because I think if I have a skill at reinventing these classic films for television, it’s in understanding what the original movie made me feel and why, and then recreating those feelings for you.”

Hawley continues, “On some level, the most critical feeling that you get from seeing Alien for the first time is the one that’s impossible to recreate, which is discovery of the life cycle of this creature. Every time you think that you know what this monster is, it changes into something worse. You can’t ever get back with those creatures. But if I bring in new creatures, you don’t know how they reproduce, what they eat, how they’re parasites.

“My hope is that we’ll reawaken those feelings in the viewer when they watch the show from week to week.”

Producer David Zucker tells SFX Magazine, “It’s difficult to deliver one great new creature. But to take on the magnitude of what Noah was envisioning was kind of breathless. It got a big ‘Whoa’ out of [Ridley] at the beginning. The ambition and the originality of what Noah had conceived and his designs on what he endeavored to accomplish was significant.”

The new issue of SFX Magazine, the world’s number one sci-fi, fantasy and horror magazine, will be released this Wednesday. Check out the “Alien: Earth”-themed cover down below.

Creator Noah Hawley’s “Alien: Earth“ will premiere with the franchise horror series’ first two episodes on August 12 at 8pm on FX and Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally. New episodes will follow weekly on Tuesdays at 8pm through September 23.
