First Look: IFC Midnight Warms Up to Body Horror ‘Hatching’, Which Utilizes Animatronics!

IFC Midnight, who has been on somewhat of a roll with The Wretched and the forthcoming Relic, has beaten out rival bids to acquire North American to Finnish coming-of-age body horror Hatching, reports Screendaily out of Cannes.

Bloody Disgusting scored the first image from Hatching, which centers on Tinja, a 12-year-old gymnast desperate to please her mother, a woman obsessed with presenting the image of a perfect family to the world through her popular blog.

“One night, Tinja discovers a strange egg. She hides it and keeps it warm until it hatches. What emerges is beyond belief…”

Ilja Rautsi wrote the screenplay, and Siiri Solalinna, Sophia Heikkila, Jani Volanen, Oiva Ollila, and Reino Nordin star.

Doing some digging, we learned that a birdlike creature is hatched and Tinja names it Alli and hides it in her closet. She feeds the bird vomit and it gradually transforms into Tinja’s doppelganger. “Tinja’s buried aggression and jealousy pushes Alli into increasingly violent attacks until no one is safe.”

Here’s something exciting to note. Star Wars, Jurassic World and Prometheus veteran Gustav Hoegen serves as animatronics(!) designer, and effects make-up designer Conor O’Sullivan has worked on “Game of Thrones”, X-Men: First Class and The Hours.

The plan is to first launch Hanna Bergholm’s feature directorial debut at a major international festival in 2021 before releasing it in theaters and on VOD platforms.
