Lynchian Queer Horror Film ‘Rapture in Blue’ Hitting DVD Shelves in October

Just in time for Halloween, Altered Innocence will be releasing 19-year-old filmmaker Ryder Houston‘s queer thriller Rapture in Blue on DVD/VOD on October 27th.

Partially funded from the ad revenue garnered from Houston’s YouTube channel, the 50-minute film started as a noir-ish script called Boys, Smoke and Mirrors before being morphed into what it is today after Houston saw David Lynch’s Lost Highway for the first time. Filled with tons of pulsing blues & reds, Rapture in Blue is now a loving ode to all things Lynch.

The film’s production can only be described as “guerrilla.” Houston, who was 18 at the time of filming, was aided by fellow young media producers who provided him with the professional filming equipment he needed to bring his vision to life. The film went into production in the summer of 2019, with the young director shooting for 12-16 hours each day. He would also drive an old beat-up truck across town to haul the aforementioned equipment to set every day, despite not yet having his driver’s license. After wrapping, Houston spent the next several months dubbing scenes in his mother’s closet.

The synopsis of the film is as follows: Rapture in Blue follows Jason’s (Bryce Lederer) quest through flickering neon and hazy noir shadows to find his true self. After he tries to use his childhood home for a steamy rendezvous with his girlfriend Valerie (Sarah Greenfield), they discover that it is newly occupied by the smoldering Sebastian (Tanner Garmon), who eagerly warms up to anxious Jason. Wracked with desires he’s long tried to ignore while also being pressured by his girlfriend’s sensual advances, a growing sense of unease and dread permeates his life. After receiving an ‘impossible’ photo of him embracing Sebastian, Jason realizes he needs to confront the madness consuming him from all sides.
