Quentin Tarantino Writing a ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Novelization and Book on ’70s Cinema!

Before he gets to work on his 10th and (allegedly) final film, Quentin Tarantino has just signed a two-book deal with Harper, Deadline reports this morning.

In addition to a novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the site reports, Tarantino will also be writing a book filled with essays on the cinema of the 1970s!

The novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is coming next summer, and it’s set to expand upon the characters and storylines from the 2019 movie.

Deadline notes, “The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood novel will chart the lives of TV actor Rick Dalton and his stunt double Cliff Booth both forward and backward in time.”

“In the seventies movie novelizations were the first adult books I grew up reading,” Tarantino said in a statement this morning. “And to this day I have a tremendous amount of affection for the genre. So as a movie-novelization aficionado, I’m proud to announce Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, my contribution to this often marginalized, yet beloved sub-genre in literature. I’m also thrilled to further explore my characters and their world in a literary endeavor that can (hopefully) sit alongside its cinematic counterpart.”

As for the non-fiction book, it’s titled Cinema Speculation. It’s being described as a “deep dive into the movies of the 1970’s, a rich mix of essays, reviews, personal writing, and tantalizing “what if’s,” from one of cinema’s most celebrated filmmakers, and its most devoted fan.”
