WB Sending Entire 2021 Slate to HBO Max & Theaters; ‘Conjuring 3,’ ‘Mortal Kombat,’ ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ ‘Malignant’ & More

Mega news as we say farewell to a nightmarish 2020 and look forward to a more hopeful 2021.

While a vaccine is on the way, it’s still unclear as to what the forthcoming year will look like, and Warner Bros. Picture Group isn’t taking any chances. Today they announced one of the biggest, craziest pieces of news that I’ve had the pleasure of delivering in my 20-year service to the horror community.

The studio’s entire 2021 slate is going to debut exclusively on HBO Max, the same day as theaters, with a 30-day window.

Films of note include Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Suicide Squad, Malignant, Dune, and Matrix 4.

Following the one month HBO Max access period domestically, each film will leave the platform and continue theatrically in the U.S. and international territories, with all customary distribution windows applying to the title, reports Deadline.

While none of these dates are set in stone as of this writing, the Adam Wingard-directed Godzilla vs. Kong was set for release on May 21st; series director James Wan has passed the baton to Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona) for The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It, which was slated for June 4th; the James Wan-directed Giallo-inspired Malignant and the new Mortal Kombat, produced by Wan and directed by Simon McQuoid, are awaiting dates.

Genre adjacent: James Gunn‘s sequel The Suicide Squad currently arrives on August 6; Denis Villeneuve‘s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune had been slated for October 21; and Lana Wachowski‘s The Matrix 4 is currently set for December 22nd

It’s also worth noting that Warner Bros. could decide to shift any of the aforementioned titles out of 2021 and into the following year.

It’s also worth mentioning that, according to Variety, the HBO Max/theaters model is a “unique one-year plan.” Executives at the company have stressed the initiative isn’t expected to continue into 2022 or beyond — it’s considered a temporary solution in response to the ongoing global heath crisis.

“With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films,” WarnerMedia chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff said in a statement. “We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors, and we’re extremely grateful to our filmmaking partners for working with us on this innovative response to these circumstances.”

Other films announced include The Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Those Who Wish Me Dead, In The Heights, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Reminiscence, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard, and Cry Macho.
