‘Dead Silence’: James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s Ventriloquist-Horror Streaming in 4K!

Before there was Insidious and The Conjuring, director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell announced themselves to the world with their indie Saw, which turned into a mega-franchise for Lionsgate.

Following the smash horror hit’s release, Wan decided against directing the sequel and instead opted to reteam with Whannell for Universal Pictures’ shockingly underrated Dead Silence, the duo’s ventriloquist-themed Gothic horror story that starred “True Blood’s” Ryan Kwanten as a young widower who returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife’s murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a deceased ventriloquist. The film introduced horror fans to Judith Roberts as the frightening Mary Shaw and, unfortunately, never gained enough of an audience to demand a sequel.

Today, the film went on sale on various platforms for only $4.99, and a deeper dive revealed that VUDU has Dead Silence (both theatrical and unrated) available for UHD rental for only $3.99. Unfortunately, it is not available for purchase. Weirdly, FandangoNOW has the 4K for both versions only available for purchase at a $19.99 price tag.

The years have been kind to Dead Silence, a forgotten gem lost in a sea of great films from both Wan and Whannell, the latter of which has turned to directing one of the Insidious sequels as well as both Upgrade and The Invisible Man. At the very least, pick up the HD version for only $4.99.
