Netflix Explores the Story of Elisa Lam in New Docuseries “Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel”

Zak Bagans and his “Ghost Adventures” team kicked off the new year with a trip inside the infamous Cecil Hotel, and now Netflix will also be taking a trip to that infamous location.

Variety broke the news today that Netflix will be premiering the brand new docuseries “Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel” on February 10th of this year.

Weeks after being reported missing back in 2013, the body of Canadian student Elisa Lam was discovered inside a water tank atop the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. Security camera footage of Lam in the moments prior to her disappearance and mysterious death saw her behaving strangely; the footage went viral on the internet, and the case remains a haunting mystery.

The site details, “The four-episode season comes from executive producer and director Joe Berlinger, who sets out to deconstruct what really happened to college student and tourist Lam, who stayed at the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles in February 2013. When Lam vanished, leaving behind all of her possessions, including her wallet and ID in her hotel room, it ignited a media frenzy and mobilized a community of internet detectives who had suspicions about the last-known security camera footage released of her, as well as of some of the other people staying in the hotel. The docuseries features interviews with hotel employees and guests, as well as with some of those who investigated the case.”

“As a true crime documentarian, I was fascinated in 2013 when the elevator video of Elisa Lam went viral and legions of amateur detectives used the internet to try to solve the mystery of what happened to her, a 21-year-old Canadian tourist on her first trip to Los Angeles,” said Berlinger. “So, when journalist Josh Dean, who is also a producer on the project, brought us his research into this case, we realized there was as an opportunity to do something different by not just telling the story of Elisa’s disappearance, but to create a series that explores a particular location’s role in encouraging or abetting crime — or the perception thereof.”

“Crime Scene” is set to become a recurring true crime anthology series for Netflix.

The Top 10 Streaming Scary Movies of Today (According to Netflix)

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
