Chloé Zhao Will Write and Direct a “Futuristic Sci-fi Western” Take on ‘Dracula’ for Universal Pictures

The “Dark Universe” is dead and all kinds of unique Universal Monsters movies are being put into development, with THR breaking the news of the latest one this week.

According to the site, Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) will be writing and directing a new take on Dracula for Universal, “described as an original, futuristic, sci-fi Western.”

THR notes, “Themes of being on society’s fringes, something Zhao has tackled in her previous work, will course through the project’s veins.”

“Chloé’s singular lens shines a light on stories of the overlooked and misunderstood,” Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer said in a statement today. “We are thrilled to be working with her as she reimagines one of the most iconic outsider characters ever created.”

“I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody. I’m very excited to work with Donna, Peter and the team at Universal to reimagine such a beloved character,” Zhao said in a statement of her own.

Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation) is also developing a take on Dracula for Universal, part of the studio’s post-“Dark Universe” initiative to hire diverse filmmakers to put their own unique spins on their stable of classic monsters. That began with Leigh Whannell’s hit The Invisible Man, a response to the failure of the Tom Cruise-starring Mummy.
