“Lovecraft Country”, ‘Promising Young Woman’ and ‘La Llorona’ Receive Golden Globes Nominations

The nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning, with the horror genre represented in a few different categories this year.

For starters, HBO and creator Misha Green’s “Lovecraft Country,” based on Matt Ruff’s novel, has been nominated for Best Television Series – Drama. Set in the 1950s, the series intertwines the very real racism in America with the very fictional monsters you’d expect to find in a Lovecraft novel; and yes, Cthulhu makes an appearance, briefly in the first episode.

In addition to “Lovecraft Country,” Emerald Fennell‘s vengeance film Promising Young Woman is up for four Golden Globes, nominated for Best Director – Motion Picture (Fennell), Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama (Carey Mulligan), Best Motion Picture – Drama, and Best Screenplay – Motion Picture. This bodes well for the film’s Academy Awards chances.

In the Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language category, Shudder and Jayro Bustamante’s La Llorona has earned itself a nom. That film could also potentially be up for an Oscar.

Netflix and Ryan Murphy’s horror-tinged “Ratched” was nominated in a few categories as well, up for Best Television Series – Drama, Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama (Sarah Paulson), and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (Cynthia Nixon).

Jared Leto, who plays a creepy serial killer in HBO Max’s brand new thriller The Little Things, has been nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture.

This year’s Globes will be airing live on February 28.
