Samuel L. Jackson’s ‘Deep Blue Sea’ Death Was Recreated in Verizon’s Super Bowl Commercial [Video]

It was 22 years ago that Samuel L. Jackson made a hugely memorable appearance in Renny Harlin’s Deep Blue Sea, absolutely devoured by a massive shark right smack dab in the middle of the sort of rousing speech only Jackson can deliver on the big screen. It’s one of the all-time great horror movie jump scares, and it was paid tribute to at the Super Bowl last night.

Jackson lent his likeness to Verizon for their Super Bowl commercial this year, voicing a computer-generated version of himself for an ad promoting Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband and its ultra-low lag. The commercial was geared towards gamers, with Jackson delivering, well, a rousing speech before being absolutely devoured by a massive shark that comes from behind.

Mind you, Deep Blue Sea wasn’t directly addressed by name, but it was a clear homage to Jackson’s role in the 1999 shark attack horror movie. And the real ones damn sure know.

Watch Samuel L. Jackson get eaten by a shark…again…in the commercial below. And stay until the end to see him hanging out *inside* the shark, something we definitely didn’t see in 1999!
