Bones Is Good Though.
We’re strutting through the middle portion of June, which has seen a bunch of episodes on off-kilter films like “wolf allegory” Wolves of Kromer and the exceedingly dark horror comedy Excision last week.
Now it’s time for an apology tour as we – along with guest Carolyn Mauricette – (re)discover Ernest R Dickerson‘s Bones. The film finds the underrated director taking his interest in a variety of (seemingly non-complementary) subgenres like blaxploitation, slasher and Italian Gothic and melding them together. It shouldn’t work, but it does ~95% of the time.
In Bones, a group of twenty-something kids purchase a derelict old house in a neighborhood on the cusp of gentrification with plans to turn it into a night club. Unbeknownst to them, the house was once owned by Jimmy Bones (Snoop Dogg), who met a grisly fate inside, and is ready to exact a bloody vengeance on everyone who wronged him…with the exception of his true love Pearl (Pam Grier) and her daughter, Cynthia (Bianca Lawson).

Episode 130 – Bones (2001) feat. Carolyn Mauricette
Prep your dogg jokes and don’t go into the derelict old house because we’re checking out Ernest R Dickerson’s 2001 blaxploitation / slasher / Italian Gothic horror film Bones. Joining us is Carolyn Mauricette, Development Coordinator & Programmer of the Blood In The Snow film festival, who has a deep affection for both Pam Grier and Snoop Dogg.
This episode is, first and foremost, an apology for sleeping on the film, which is a ton of fun. We heap praise on Dickerson’s direction, the film’s litany of homages and its many visually stunning sequences. Bones has characters we actually care about, doesn’t make a big deal about a mixed race relationship and invests a ton of screen time on Snoop & Grier’s romance that other films would have cut out.
Plus: the agelessness of Grier and Bianca Lawson, undead decapitated heads, the film’s questionable marketing, the lack of studio confidence in black horror and, finally, Carolyn’s hilarious edible story.
Cross out Bones!
Coming up on Wednesday: We’re venturing back to the 50s to decode the male bond between Mark and David in The Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954)!
