We’re just two weeks away from Nia DaCosta‘s upcoming Candyman, which looks to breathe new life into the franchise that was birthed from a short story by Clive Barker.
The film is a direct sequel to the 1992 horror classic and this time stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Anthony, an aspiring artist living in a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.
The legend of Candyman has returned and Anthony is consumed. In this first clip, watch as Anthony says “His” name. Is he brave enough to repeat it four more times?
In a second piece of footage, Anthony is convinced he’s seen the Candyman. When his girlfriend, Brianna (Teyonah Parris), attempts to prove that Candyman’s not real, Anthony loses it and breaks all the mirrors in the room. There’s a bonus here in Anthony’s art, which appears to tip a hat toward the “hive” theory.

In Candyman, co-written by Jordan Peele, “For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.”
