It was back in the Summer of 2021 that Netflix acquired Texas Chainsaw Massacre from Legendary Pictures, a sequel to Tobe Hooper’s original classic that was originally going to slice its way into theaters. Instead, of course, the film ended up coming exclusively to Netflix on Friday, February 18, and the first streaming numbers from Netflix have arrived today.
Mind you, these numbers only reflect the time period between February 14-20, so what we’re looking at here is only a snapshot of the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie’s performance across the first three days of release. But the math is looking good here, with Texas Chainsaw Massacre coming in the #2 spot on Netflix’s global chart for the entire week.
According to Netflix, Texas Chainsaw Massacre was viewed by subscribers for 29,180,000 hours last week, second only to The Tinder Swindler and its 34,450,000 hours viewed.
Last week, Texas Chainsaw Massacre broke into Netflix’s “Top 10 in Films” chart in 94 different countries, across the United States, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The streaming service explains how this all works, “Every Tuesday, we publish four global Top 10 lists for films and TV: Film (English), TV (English), Film (Non-English), and TV (Non-English). These lists rank titles based on weekly hours viewed: the total number of hours that our members around the world watched each title from Monday to Sunday of the previous week.”
Again, we’re only dealing with the first three days of Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘s performance here, so next week’s numbers will give us a clearer picture of how the new movie is doing on Netflix. But the news is certainly good thus far, and Netflix is probably feeling pretty good about their decision to acquire Texas Chainsaw Massacre from Legendary last year.
Will they order up a sequel? We wouldn’t be surprised to see it.
