Development Footage From the Cancelled ‘Dead Rising 5’ Appears Online [Watch]

So, the Dead Rising series. Yeah, judging from the diminishing returns from each entry after the 2006 original, and the response from the last entry in Dead Rising 4, it’s safe to say that Capcom will have this series on hold for a bit. Making it sting even more is footage that has appeared online from the cancelled fifth entry, Dead Rising 5: Dia de los Muertos.

Per PlayStation Lifestyle, early prototype game footage of the cancelled title has been revealed through the portfolio of level designer Nick Sinkewicz. From the looks of things, Dead Rising 5 would take place in Mexico, and would see the return of Dead Rising 2 protagonist Chuck Greene.

Among the footage, Sinkewicz dropped some details on what could have been a useful addition to the cancelled entry. The Loot Containment System, which in contrast to previous entries that had your loot strewn about, making it difficult to tell which loot was the important stuff, would “contextualize different drops, clean up the environment, and free up some memory!”

Sinkewicz had worked on five levels for Dead Rising 5: Barrio, Hotel, Camps, Mayan Temple and Safehouse. The level that had gotten the most attention was the Camps, which included zombies and “several gang bases to raid leading up to a final boss!” The boss fight in question against El Guapo, described as “some crazy kind of drug lord with an electrified metallic fake arm”, was in the early phases.

As for the other levels, they remained in grey box form. The Barrio level was based off an actual section of a town in Mexico, though Sinkewicz has forgotten the name of the town.

According to the dates of the videos, Dead Rising 5 was in production about a year after Dead Rising 4 had been released. However, once Capcom had closed their Vancouver Studio (which had been set to work on the franchise), development on the game was cancelled. Whether we see a return of the franchise at some point remains to be seen.

Currently, Dead Rising 4 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.
