As a longtime fan of Frankenstein, I can only imagine that Guillermo del Toro is absolutely ecstatic to be adapting the Mary Shelley novel for the screen. With such reverence for the source material, I expect that his take on the property will show great love for the IP while putting his own unique spin on the proceedings.
Netflix just released the first full trailer for the upcoming film, and from what I can tell, del Toro’s fingerprints are all over it. The preview is moody and steeped in Gothic atmosphere. Check it out in the player window below to see what you think.

In addition to the trailer debut, the streamer also dropped a still that provides a closer look at Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s Monster. The actor narrates the trailer, but we mostly only see fleeting glimpses of him within.
The still below offers a much better look at the actor in full wardrobe and makeup. As you can see, his striking features are completely unrecognizable behind the layers of latex.
Jacob Elordi as The Monster in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein

Frankenstein plays out like this:
A brilliant but egotistical scientist brings a monstrous creature to life in a daring experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
In addition to Elordi as the titular character’s monster, the film also stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein. Christoph Waltz features as well-to-do arms dealer Harlander, a character not featured in the source material. Mia Goth will play Elizabeth, Victor’s brother William’s fiancée. This marks a deviation from the tome where the character is instead engaged to Victor. And Felix Kammerer will appear as William.
Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, and Charles Dance round out the balance of the cast.
While some of the early reviews have been complimentary, our Josh Korngut didn’t quite connect with Frankenstein. He was left disappointed with the film’s tonal inconsistencies and tendency to lean too heavily into melodrama.
The summation of his coverage reads: “Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein feels closer to the bloated, action-heavy Dark Universe than to the sparkling, heartfelt Gothic fantasies we expect from him.”
If you’re not deterred by Josh’s misgivings and want to check the film out, you’ll be able to do so soon. Netflix will release the film in select theaters beginning October 17, 2025. Frankenstein will then be available to stream on the platform shortly thereafter, starting November 7.

That’s all that we’ve got for you, for the time being. Make sure to stay tuned to Dread Central in the near future for more timely updates.
