After opening to $80+ million at the box office, A24 is fast-tracking a sequel to Kane Parsons‘ liminal horror Backrooms, which woke Gen Z up to the entire theatrical experience.
Parsons has been pretty open about his intentions, teasing Backrooms as an entry point into a larger universe.
Now, Deadline is offering another small morsel of intel: Parsons is looking for a screenwriting collaborator to work on the sequel with.
As we now know, Osgood Perkins (Longlegs, The Monkey) mentored the young filmmaker through his first studio filmmaking experience, and now he’s looking for a fresh voice to help continue to build on what he started online all of those years ago.
“Parsons’ contract for more Backrooms resides with A24,” Deadline reiterates. “Again, it’s super early, so no star attachments or green lights as of this time.”
In Backrooms, Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Clark, a furniture store owner who discovers a portal to a strange, empty office space hidden in the back of his shop.
Lukita Maxwell, Mark Duplass, and Finn Bennett also star in the A24 horror movie that’s one of the biggest horror movies of all time.
