As part of its 30th-anniversary lineup announcement, the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival revealed a first look at one of its horror selections, The Night (Gaua), the Basque-language folk-horror fantasy from filmmaker Urkijo (Errementari, Irati).
They write that the film channels Basque mythology and witchcraft legend from northern Spain, weaving together a female-driven narrative of destiny and queer sensibility.
“Set in the 17th century during the era of witch persecutions in the Basque region of northern Spain, the story follows Kattalin, a woman fleeing an abusive husband. Lost in the forest at night, she encounters three women who tell stories of witches, spirits, and village secrets. As the tales unfold, Kattalin becomes entangled in them herself.”
Urkijo’s influences reportedly include Basque ethnographic traditions, the artwork of Francisco Goya, and the fantasy-horror work of Mike Mignola.
