HBO Max Is Loading Up on Horror This August with ‘The Strangers’, ‘Barbarian’, ‘Thanksgiving’, and More

If you’re a horror fan, HBO Max is quietly putting together one of its strongest genre lineups of the summer.

The August slate is packed with modern favorites, cult classics, and several major streaming debuts, including Strangers films, Eli Roth favorites, and one of the best horror films of the last decade.

August 1

The month kicks off with an impressive batch of genre titles.

The Strangers: Chapter 2 makes its HBO Max debut just months after its theatrical release, continuing Renny Harlin‘s revival of the home invasion franchise.

August 17

Ahead of Eli Roth‘s Ice Cream Man arriving in theaters, HBO Max is bringing back Thanksgiving. Inspired by Roth’s infamous fake trailer from Grindhouse, the slasher instantly became a modern holiday horror favorite and deserves another viewing before his next film arrives.

August 21

As previously reported, A24‘s acclaimed musical drama Mother Mary arrives on HBO Max, starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. While not horror, it’s one of the month’s biggest streaming premieres.

August 30

The end of the month belongs to horror fans.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 finally joins HBO Max, while The Strangers: Prey at Night also arrives the same day, meaning subscribers can binge the entire trilogy in one place.

Also streaming August 30 is Knock Knock, Eli Roth‘s twisted psychological thriller starring Keanu Reeves as a devoted husband whose life unravels after two mysterious young women unexpectedly show up at his door. It’s one of Roth’s most underrated films and absolutely worth revisiting.
