The future of Alien: Romulus 2 has been anything but quiet.
After the success of Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus, fans have spent months wondering what comes next for the franchise. While Álvarez confirmed he would not return to direct the sequel, 20th Century Studios has continued expanding the Alien universe, with Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You, Whalefall) reportedly developing a separate film of his own.
Then yesterday, things got even stranger.
An unverified report began circulating online claiming that Alien: Romulus 2 had officially been shelved.
It didn’t take long for that rumor to be shot down.
Steve Asbell, President of Production at 20th Century Studios, responded directly on X to a post sharing the claim with a one-word reply:
“Nope.”
It’s a brief response, but it’s also the first direct public comment from the studio regarding the sequel’s status in quite some time.
While Asbell’s reply doesn’t tell us where the project currently stands—or who, if anyone, will ultimately direct it—it does make one thing abundantly clear: reports that Alien: Romulus 2 has been shelved are not accurate.
As for why those rumors surfaced in the first place, that’s far less clear.
Speculation has surrounded the project for months after Fede Álvarez confirmed he would not return to direct the sequel, explaining that he intends to remain involved as a producer and co-writer while another filmmaker takes the helm. Since then, rumors have circulated suggesting creative differences may have contributed to the change behind the scenes, but neither Álvarez nor 20th Century Studios has publicly confirmed those claims.
At the same time, the studio appears to be broadening the franchise rather than slowing it down. Separate reports indicate that Brian Duffield is developing his own Alien feature for 20th Century Studios, suggesting Disney and the studio are embracing the same strategy that’s worked so well for Predator: empowering multiple filmmakers to tell standalone stories within a shared universe.
For now, that’s about all we know.
There are still plenty of unanswered questions surrounding the future of Alien: Romulus 2, but thanks to Asbell’s public response, fans can cross one rumor off the list. The sequel may be evolving behind the scenes, but according to the President of Production at 20th Century Studios, it hasn’t been buried.
