Sam Raimi Handpicks ‘The Hole in the Ground’ Director Lee Cronin to Direct the Next ‘Evil Dead’ Movie

Sam Raimi had revealed last year that a brand new Evil Dead movie was in the works with a new director he hand-picked, and Bruce Campbell spilled the beans to Empire this week.

Campbell has announced that Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) is the director selected by Raimi and the team, with Cronin on board to write and direct the next Evil Dead.

It’s called Evil Dead Now,” Campbell added. “Sam handpicked Lee – he did a cool movie called The Hole in the Ground. We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.”

Cronin’s Evil Dead Now won’t feature the character of Ash and presumably won’t have any ties to Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead, instead telling a brand new story within the universe.

From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating,” says Campbell. “You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”

As always, more as we learn it. A24’s The Hole in the Ground was released last year, and it’s Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 84% score. You can watch the trailer below.
