We ended October with some pretty huge news. Bloody Disgusting has teamed with Dark Star Pictures to acquire the festival hit Honeydew, a tripped-out homage to classic slashers like Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
The acclaimed backwoods horror feature, written and directed by Devereux Milburn, begins when strange cravings and hallucinations befall a young couple after seeking shelter in the home of an aging farmer and her peculiar son.
Honeydew stars Malin Barr and boasts the acting debut of Sawyer Spielberg, son of director Steven Spielberg, who sat down with THR after last week’s big announcement to talk about the sizzling new horror pic and his first foray in front of the camera.
“I was excited but nervous because I haven’t had a lot of camera time in front of the camera,” Spielberg reflects on the journey. “By day three I was gaining a little bit more confidence and having a little bit more fun and by the end of the film, I definitely felt more hungry to do more film and TV work.”
While Sawyer’s debut is both exciting and immensely interesting, The Hollywood Reporter got Milburn to talk about the film’s closely guarded mystery role from a well-known actor.
“She was game to do whatever, and was the most accessible and most easy-going about being put in that character,” recalls Milburn. “It’s not exactly a character everyone would be willing [to play]. Especially someone with the resume she has.”
Spielberg tells the site about one day of the shoot that particularly stood out.
“I remember looking up and seeing [the mystery actor] and just thinking to myself, ‘How did I get here?’ I think I was just as shocked as everyone else was who saw the movie, in that moment.”
Honeydew is set for a theatrical run in March before a VOD and DVD release in April. Watch this spot for updates.
