[Horror Queers Podcast] Celebrating 100 Episodes With a Little ‘Cruising’

Man to Lay by Men.com

After a fun November filled with Holly Hunter & Sigourney Weaver in Copycat and a terrifying flora-filled vacation in Carter Smith’s The Ruins, last week Horror Queers entered triple-digit territory with episode 100. It’s been a wild ride these last two years and Trace and I are ready to celebrate with a milestone episode on William Friedkin‘s Cruising.

In the notorious 1980 film, Al Pacino plays Steve Burns, a “straight” cop who goes undercover in New York’s leather and S&M queer community to catch a killer preying on gay men. But as the bodies pile up and the pressure mounts to put away *anyone* for the crime, Burns begins to lose himself, straying from girlfriend Nancy (Karen Allen) and bonding with flirty neighbor Ted (Don Scardino). Will Steve catch the killer before he becomes the next victim…or is he in danger of becoming a killer himself?

Episode 100 – Cruising (1980) feat. Andrew Scahill

“Hold onto your hips and lips because for our 100th episode, we’re going Cruising! Along for the *ahem* ride, is film professor Andrew Scahill, who guides us through an academic deep dive of the 1980 William Friedkin film, which has been one of our most requested titles since we started Horror Queers!

There’s LOTS to talk about: the heavily protested production, the depiction of the gay community, the critique of the police, and the frank depiction of sex and community. Throw in the film’s historical legacy and its reappraisal through a contemporary lens and there’s plenty to sink our teeth into.

Plus: Pacino’s look of gay panic, The Velvet Rage, and a Rebecca/Cruising porn parody! Don’t blame us – you made us do this!

Cross out Cruising!

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re closing out November with a look at queer director Bill Condon’s 1995 contribution to the Candyman franchise with Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh!

The Top 10 Streaming Scary Movies of Today (According to Netflix)

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
