Stay Home, Watch Horror: 5 Horror Movies About Cults to Stream This Week

Cults make for one of the most fascinating subjects in horror. Unflappably happy cult members following their leaders as they commit acts of violence makes for a jarring contrast that only further draws us into their mysterious ways. What would make someone blindly follow another to such depths? What insidious web have they crafted for the unwitting protagonist walking into their trap? No matter the ideology behind them, horror movies about cults bide their time building steady tension until they reach shocking finales.

This week’s streaming picks center around horrors induced by cults, from nature-based communes to hell inspired fanaticism. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Mandy – Shudder

The quiet lives of Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough) get irrevocably altered when the hippie cult Children of the New Dawn pass by Mandy on the road. Cult leader Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache) decides he must have her and unleashes his followers to fulfill his lust. However, Sand doesn’t take lightly to rejection, resulting in a harrowing tragedy that sends Red on a drug-induced quest for vengeance. Panos Cosmatos’s highly stylized, psychedelic revenge thriller delivers vibrant imagery and ultraviolence. It’s grounded by a fantastic cast bringing their A-game, including a raw performance by lead Cage. Shudder offers special bonus content, like deleted scenes, for Mandy as well.

The Other Lamb – Hulu

Selah (Raffey Cassidy) was born into an all-female cult wholly isolated from modern society. Their forest commune is presided over by charismatic leader Shepherd (The Invitation’s Michiel Huisman). Now that Selah is becoming of age and Shepherd takes a keen interest in her, a series of nightmares and disturbing revelations spurns the teen into questioning everything she thought she knew. The provocative and gorgeous cult thriller delivers on atmosphere but favors subtlety. In other words, this is a slow-burn that opts for quiet, existential chills over scares. However, it’s unafraid to get bloody when it needs to.

Silent Hill – Crackle

In this film adaptation of the popular video game, Rose (Radha Mitchell) takes her adoptive daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) to Silent Hill’s mysterious town for answers on Sharon’s troubled past. One car crash later, Sharon is missing, and the town is blanketed in a thick fog inhabited by monsters. Rose will have to fight both the monsters and the town’s fanatical cult to get her daughter back. It’s a visually impressive adaptation full of memorable creatures and gore. The cast is stacked as well; Alice Krige continues to nail the terrifying villainess role.

The Invitation – Netflix

Will (Logan Marshall-Green) accepts an invitation to his ex-wife’s dinner party, which quickly proves to reopen old wounds. Awkward social interactions turn into something far more sinister when hostess Eden (Tammy Blanchard) reveals her cultish reasons why she’s been absent the past two years. Karyn Kusama’s master class in unsettling psychological horror builds to one of the most unforgettable third acts of all time, with a final parting shot that elicits chills.

Kill List – Criterion Channel

Former soldier turned hitman Jay (Neil Maskell) suffers trauma from a disastrous hit job to the point where he’s been unable to work since. At the urging of his wife Shel (MyAnna Buring) and partner, Gal (Michael Smiley), he accepts a new assignment. Their contract is signed in blood, and Jay finds himself unraveling as he’s drawn into a bizarre conspiracy where the truth is far more horrifying than imagined. Ben Wheatley’s psychological horror movie blends family drama, action, and cultish terror. There are plenty of eerie cult clues sprinkled along the way, yet it still won’t prepare you for the thrilling finale.

The Top 10 Streaming Scary Movies of Today (According to Netflix)

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
