‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Exceeding Pandemic Box Office Expectations With $9.6 Million Opening Day

As we reported over the weekend, WB/Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong has been slaying the international box office since its release last week, with the film taking in $121.8 million over the weekend. And though the film was released directly to HBO Max here in the United States this week, the domestic box office picture is looking as good as the international one.

In its first day of release here in the States, director Adam Wingard‘s mashup fight film (read our review here) raked in $9.6 million, a new record for the pandemic box office.

As noted by Exhibitor Relations Co., the film was released in 2,409 locations yesterday, expanding to 3,064 locations on Friday. More theaters, of course, means more money.

Godzilla vs. Kong had been projected to make roughly $20-30 million across its five day domestic opening weekend, but it’s looking like that number may be smashed to bits.

Of course, none of these numbers would be exceptional in normal times and under normal conditions – in 2019, for the sake of rough comparison, Godzilla: King of the Monsters had an opening day domestic total of $19 million in 4,108 theaters – but it’s great to see Godzilla vs. Kong performing above expectations at a time when audiences are only now starting to get comfortable with the idea of being back inside theaters. Not to mention, the film is again already available for at-home viewing, and yet it’s still performing quite well at the box office.

We’ll keep you posted on the film’s performance throughout the weekend.
