In case you were wondering if we were ever going to get a follow-up to The Last of Us Part II, apparently Naughty Dog Creative director Neil Druckmann has a story outline all ready to go. However, that’s about it for now.
During an appearance on the Script Apart podcast (thanks, IGN), Druckmann reveals that he does indeed have plans for a third entry in the series. However, it’s just not in the cards at the moment.
“I don’t know how much I want to reveal,” says Druckmann. “[co-writer Halley Gross] and I did write an outline for a story, that we’re not making – but I hope one day can see the light of day – that explores a little bit what happens after this game. We’ll see.”
Given the insane success of Part II, it would seem like a no-brainer for launch into Part III. However, as Druckmann points out, games like TLOU do require a lot of investment. “These games take so much to make. [Part II], I’ve been thinking about it for seven years, between when the last game came out and when this came out […] You want to make sure you’re jazzed by the idea that you have, [that] it feels like it’s challenging.”
This is all on top of the rumour that Naughty Dog may in fact be doing a remake of the original game, though that wasn’t discussed. Regardless, Druckmann states that the developer is currently weighing its options as to what to do next.
“After we finish one of our big titles, we take a long time to explore different ideas, whether it’s going to be Last of Us III, whether it’s something new, whether there’s some old franchise we want to go back to. I like to fully explore all of those, then look at, like: okay, we have all of these ideas in front of us. As a studio, what do we want to commit to? Because it’s a huge commitment – monetary, time, passion, talent, so you think about all the opportunity costs that come with that.”
Currently, The Last of Us Part II is out on the PlayStation 4. As for the upcoming HBO adaptation, it was recently announced that Jasmila Žbanić & Ali Abbasi are on board as directors for the series.
