[Video] ‘The Dark Pictures Anthology’ Dev Talks Series Inspirations; Dreams of Making ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ Game?

With The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes hitting this October (and European fans getting that sweet-looking Pazuzu Edition variant), IGN sat down with Supermassive Games director Will Doyle to have a fun little chat about what his dream horror projects would be. Not surprisingly, Aliens was a topic, but also the untapped potential of A Nightmare on Elm Street or Day of the Dead videogame!

When it comes to approaching the development of their titles, Doyle explains that they have a set of pillars to fit their gameplay around. “We’ve looked at so many different genres. For making these games, we have a set of ‘pillars’ that we fit our gameplay around. So, we always have to have a really terrible threat,” says Doyle.

For House of Ashes, Supermassive drew inspiration from James Cameron’s Aliens, which Doyle described as having this “horrible, implacable threat” from the Xenomorphs. “The interesting thing about the Aliens franchise is the creature itself is so inhuman. There’s nothing that you can connect to,” says Doyle. “It’s seemingly emotionless.”

As for what franchises he’d love to bring to videogames, A Nightmare on Elm Street is Doyle’s first idea. “A Nightmare on Elm Street has always been interesting because it has the kind of group of characters all affected by the same thing, and all connected by this shared history. It has a really horrible monster in the form of Freddy Krueger chasing after you, and also this shifting nature of going from reality to dream, and being unsure of that kind of mix. That really fits a videogame well.”

Another is Day of the Dead, which Doyle recalls that as a kid while growing up in Japan, he caught it in a local video store. “One of the video stores on my way back from school played Day of the Dead in the window of the video store, and I just stopped walking back from school and started watching it.”

And as you might expect, The Exorcist also plays a big part in House of Ashes. In researching for the game, the team came upon a story of a king that wages war against the gods, and ends up cursing his own kingdom. “Reading that, it’s like ‘Oh, that’s straight up a horror film.’ It sounds perfect.”

To hear the rest of the interview, check out IGN’s video below. House of Ashes arrives October 22 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series.

The Top 10 Streaming Scary Movies of Today (According to Netflix)

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
