Warning: this article contains Halloween Kills spoilers.
While the movie has proven to be quite polarizing, one aspect of David Gordon Green’s Halloween Kills that most fans of the franchise seem to have enjoyed is the opening sequence, which takes us back to 1978 to show us what happened directly after the events of John Carpenter’s classic. And yes, that standout sequence even marks the return of Dr. Loomis!
Donald Pleasence, who played Loomis in the original movies, of course passed away back in 1995, and the character was brought back to the screen using old school makeup effects.
It was Chris Nelson who was tasked not only with creating a “1978 Michael Myers” mask for Halloween Kills but also with turning Tom Jones Jr. into the iconic Dr. Sam Loomis.
Nelson explains on Instagram today, “No, he was not CGI, but our own construction foreman Tom Jones Jr. in an 11 piece prosthetic makeup with hair pieces. So fun to do and was a pretty quick turnaround actually from @vincentvandykefx.”
Nelson also credits the full team involved with the transformation:
- Applied by @cnelsonfx and Mark Ross
- Sculpt: @dantiri and @vincentvandykefx
- Lace Hair, Brows and beard @sasha_camacho
- Silicone run by @siliconerunner
- Molds by @carl_lyon_
As opposed to recent digital makeup work in big budget movies, the inclusion of Loomis in Halloween Kills is surprisingly seamless, largely because it was practical makeup rather than digital technology that allowed the team to bring Donald Pleasence back to the screen. The entire ’70s sequence, on the whole, is easily the film’s most impressive achievement.
