It was just last week that Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife passed $100 million at the domestic box office, becoming the twelfth movie of the year to hit that landmark. Where does the film now stand, one week later? As we heard towards Christmas, the sequel to the original classic has now reached $112,006,454 million domestically, $52,700,000m internationally.
That brings the worldwide box office total of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, as of December 14, 2021, to $164,706,454, the film adding right around $20 million to its total since this time last week.
How is Afterlife stacking up to the 2016 reboot thus far? Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters was of course released in theaters during pre-pandemic times, which naturally means it was in a much better position to have a stronger performance. That said, Ghostbusters ’16 ended with $128 million domestically, $100 million internationally, and $229 million worldwide.
Domestically, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is now right behind Feig’s Ghostbusters, and $64 million behind the 2016 movie at the worldwide box office. But the good news for Afterlife is that the film’s budget was *considerably* lower than Feig’s movie, the latter film ballooning to a massive $140 million production budget and essentially ensuring that it wasn’t going to make back the production/marketing spend at the box office. Reitman’s Afterlife, on the other hand, was set up for success, reportedly costing a much more reasonable $70-80 million.
Even still, Ghostbusters: Afterlife needs to make a good deal more in order to become profitable, which leaves us wondering if Sony will be ordering up another sequel any time soon. For what it’s worth, Reitman and Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan just signed an overall deal with Sony Pictures, which could bode well for the future of the franchise Reitman has deep love for.
