Indie Studio Eyeballistic Launches Petition to Remake ‘Mortal Kombat Trilogy’

It’s no secret that Mortal Kombat fans have been jerked around in regards to a remaster of the original trilogy of games for some time now. Stories of the on again, off again remaster have been floating around for years, and now indie studio Eyeballistic wants to do something about it.

Eyeballistic’s plan is to take 1996’s Mortal Kombat Trilogy, which threw every character from Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 into one game, and remaster its stages and character sprites using Unreal Engine 5.

Per DSOGaming, the developer has drawn up a Change.org petition in an attempt to gain enough signatures to convince Warner Bros. that fans still want it to happen. Eyeballistic has the backing of Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon.

And while Boon supports the idea, it’s all up to Warner Bros., who own the IP, and aren’t convinced that the game would sell the 100,000 copies needed to justify marketing costs. Which is where the petition comes in: once the petition reaches that 100,000 signatures goal, Eyeballistic will try to appeal to Warner Bros. They even plan to launch a crowdfunding campaign to get the necessary funding for the project.

Meanwhile, Eyeballistic had gone ahead and done mockups of the remastered game, and shared the screenshots with DSOGaming. “We’re planning to painstakingly recreate every detail of every stage and character in glorious 3D,” explains Eyeballistic. “Of course every fatality, brutality, friendship and animality will be there too. The characters and stages will get a face lift to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second gameplay action through the power of Unreal Engine 5. We’ll even remake all of the music by giving it a modern cinematic sound that incorporates real instruments.”

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
