I respect honesty. I admire people who will speak their mind and share their truth, even when it means going against popular sentiment. That takes guts. Stephen King has frequently shown a high level of intestinal fortitude when it comes to sharing unpopular opinions. He was a champion for Night Swim when most film scholars turned up their noses, and he had no qualms about sharing his utter disdain for Kill Bill: Volume 1 when the film was raking in positive critiques. King recently responded to a social media post with a similarly spicy reaction that caught our attention. In response to a prompt asking users to name a film nobody can convince you is good, King responded by simply saying, “Raging Bull.”
Raging Bull is widely considered a masterpiece, a complex character study about a troubled boxer (Robert De Niro) whose life outside the ring is rapidly deteriorating. The film is based on Jake LaMotta’s life and career and is adapted from his memoir, Raging Bull: My Story.

This most recent attack on Raging Bull isn’t King’s first time expressing his disdain for the film. He previously responded to a prompt naming it as “the best movie of all time” with the caption, “Sorry, no.”
Though King has been quick to share his dislike for the film, he hasn’t yet publicly revealed why he’s so put off by it. It’s possible that he takes issue with the bleak nature of the narrative or the inaccessible main character. It’s impossible to say for sure. Here’s hoping he will give a more in-depth response the next time he dogs the film on social media.
Though Raging Bull failed to impress the Misery author, it was met with near-universal acclaim from critics. Raging Bull received an impressive eight Oscar nominations and took home the awards for Best Actor and Best Editing. It’s also certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a stellar critical approval rating of 92%.
If King’s outspoken disdain for Raging Bull has you curious to see where you stand on the picture, you can currently catch it streaming on Paramount+.
That is just about all that we’ve got for you, for the time being. Be sure to stay tuned to Dread Central in the near future for more hot takes from your favorite genre personalities as we uncover them.
