THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS Remake Will Be Coming to DVD From...WHERE?

Ring around the rosies, it was.... Call me crazy, but I'm a bit baffled. How come I didn't know anything about this?? Well, it most likely was due to the fact that the remake starring the always fantastic Anjelica Huston debuted last year in October...on the Lifetime Channel!

I Don't Have Anything Against the Lifetime Channel, Mind You.... But a DISNEY HORROR CLASSIC?

It doesn't help that I generally don't watch cable, though. So this isn't a stab on Lifetime. But, hey, cool.

You may have seen me mention something about this film (and book) before, having been adapted into a 1980 Disney horror film (for kids!) before. The truly iconic novel was done proud by the House of Mouse, for sure, as the movie gave me nightmares about mirrors and rings around the rosies for months after the fact.

Not to mention an affinity for spelling a name on a window...backwards. Oh, yes.

But I do have to say the trailer as you'll see here does show some interesting promise. It's eerie. Just like how the story should be. It perhaps did Lifetime well, which is why only a year later we're getting this remake on DVD.

I Am, However, Worried That This Is a Remake of a Horror Classic

But as you know, I'm not against remakes. Above all iconic horror films, however, the true classics of my childhood do need to be left alone. But you never know: Anjelica Huston, man. Who knows: I may check out this remake of THE WATCHER OF THE WOODS and not have my entire childhood completely raped.

Fun fact: this remake was directed by Melissa Joan Hart. Sabrina the f*cking teenage witch.

And why? Because this trio of terrifying films has certain qualities. In fact, two of them were produced by Disney, of all production companies!

Fair enough, though: Disney does well with the suspense and thrill of the supernatural and everything going bump in the night. Even their classic cartoons get the scares on! Interestingly enough, you never would've guessed that these three films are as scary as they are in this day and age when gore, jump scares, and freakish special effects take center stage --

These Films Will WOW You With the Minimalist Approach to Horror

Proof that you don't need a bucket of blood to freak the sh*t out of someone. Don't get me wrong, though -- the film, and the book, CARRIE, by Stephen King ranks up there with everything else the guy wrote. These three films, though, prove that a story can scare just as much as a masked serial killer:

• LADY IN WHITE -- As far as ghost stories go, this charming tale during the golden age of the kids adventure movie (like Goonies and Monster Squad, which honestly weren't terribly scary, but fun) somehow managed to freak the ever-loving sh*t out of me when I was a kid. Even today as an adult, certain scenes chill me to the bone.

• SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES -- The first of the two Disney features. And this one's a doozie. One of my favorites, and to make it even better. Based on Ray Bradbury's novel! Some of the scenes here are utterly mystifying.

• THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS -- I honestly had some freakish nightmares after watching this Disney period piece with nostalgia.

And if you don't believe me on the scare factor with these extremely 'toned-down' horror flicks, test me. Give it a run. Rent these suckers out. Find them on Netflix. I dare you to sit down and watch one of these bad boys.

The Real Horror Gets You Thinking About Some of the More Disturbing Stuff

Honestly, the reason why these films really hit home (more than, say, Nightmare on Elm Street, or Friday the 13th) is that it gets your brain thinking. You start wondering. You start asking questions. And you're a bit worried about what the answer might be.

Mystery films and books take that cue and run with it, basically. True horror just takes that cue as well and adapts it. The result is pure gold.
