‘Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent’ Will Send Riders Straight to the Underworld

Another huge announcement out of D23 over the weekend was the reveal of new details for Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, the previously announced Indiana Jones attraction coming to Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom.

The attraction will replace the now-closed fan-favorite DINOSAUR, and while there had been plenty of speculation that Disney might simply bring Disneyland’s Indiana Jones attraction to Florida, we now know this will be a completely new adventure.

And hilariously, it’s going directly after Indy’s greatest fear: snakes.

The story finds guests rendezvousing with Dr. Jones as he explores a mysterious Maya temple near an underground cenote. According to local legend, the passage leads directly into the Maya Underworld, which is protected by an enormous serpentine creature known as the Tsukán.

Things obviously go horribly wrong.

Riders are accidentally sucked through a portal into the Underworld, where they’ll encounter monstrous bats, gigantic scorpions, fire, flames and, yes, lots and lots of snakes.

The Tsukán will appear throughout the attraction before riders eventually come face-to-face with the creature in a massive final confrontation. Disney revealed a first look at the gigantic, hand-sculpted Audio-Animatronics figure at D23, and this thing is absolutely enormous.

Why’d it have to be snakes?

Disney also revealed that the attraction’s Indiana Jones Audio-Animatronic will be the first to actually carry Harrison Ford’s likeness, which I somehow never realized wasn’t the case at Disneyland.

So, no, Animal Kingdom isn’t simply getting a reskinned version of the existing Indiana Jones ride. We’re going to the Maya Underworld, battling monsters and eventually staring down a gigantic snake.
